When a site spans several buildings or locations, running analogue audio cables between them becomes costly and hard to manage. Prowave IP audio carries paging, background music and scheduled messages over the network, so every speaker point becomes an addressable endpoint.
Where it fits
- Factories and industrial parks
- University and school campuses with several buildings
- Hospitals and healthcare complexes
- Transport hubs, ports and logistics centres
- Store, office or branch networks across cities
Common challenges and how to solve them
Cabling between buildings
Challenge. Analogue audio lines between buildings need dedicated cable, trenching and careful long-run planning. Every extension means new cable.
Solution. IP endpoints connect to the network in each building, and audio travels over infrastructure that is already in place. Where the switch supports PoE, endpoints take power from the same cable. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm PoE support on Prowave endpoints]
Zoning that changes over time
Challenge. With fixed hardware zones, moving a department or adding a production line means rewiring the zone selector.
Solution. Zones are defined in software. Any endpoint can belong to one or several zones and can be regrouped later without touching the cabling.
Central control for many locations
Challenge. When each building runs its own amplifier rack, schedules and messages drift apart and every site needs its own operator.
Solution. A central server schedules bells, background music and announcements for all zones from one place. Authorised users page from a desktop console or a PC. [PLACEHOLDER: other control options, e.g. mobile app, if available]
Reusing existing speakers
Challenge. Many sites already have working 100V or passive speakers and do not want to replace them.
Solution. IP audio terminals with built-in amplifiers connect existing speaker lines to the network. Older areas join the new system while new areas use IP speakers directly.
Integration with other building systems
Challenge. Fire panels, access control and phone systems often need to trigger announcements automatically.
Solution. Control inputs on the endpoints or server can start pre-recorded messages when an external event occurs. [PLACEHOLDER: SIP, API or other integration options supported]
Network load, security and faults
Challenge. IT teams worry about bandwidth and access, and a silent speaker in a remote building can go unnoticed for weeks.
Solution. A dedicated VLAN and QoS settings keep audio traffic predictable, and user accounts control who can page which zones. Device status in the management software shows offline endpoints straight away. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm user permissions and device monitoring features]
System components
| Component | Role in the system |
|---|---|
| IP audio server / management software | Zones, schedules, users and device status |
| IP paging console | Live announcements to selected zones |
| IP speakers | Ceiling, wall or horn speakers with built-in network decoder |
| IP audio terminal with amplifier | Connects existing passive or 100V speakers to the network |
| PoE network switches | Power and connectivity for endpoints, usually supplied with the site network |
| Audio inputs | Background music and external audio sources |
| Control inputs and outputs | Triggers from alarms and other building systems |

What we need to prepare a proposal
- Site map showing buildings and network layout
- Number of speaker points per building and area
- Existing speakers or amplifiers to reuse
- Systems that must trigger announcements
- IT requirements such as VLAN, multicast and security policy
